Summer Picnic in the Park Schedule for 2013

Even though we are expecting snow tonight summer is almost here! Well hopefully it is almost here.  Even so it's time to start up the Summer Picnic in the Park.  The summer schedule is posted below and I will also be posting weekly updates of the parks we are going to go to.  This is open to anyone who has kids who would like to go to the park.  Feel free to bring your friends too!  Some people bring lunches and eat at the park and some just go to play.  The start time is listed as around 10 am and they are every Thursday.  This week's park is going to be Faversham Park at 73rd and Ingalls.  Hope to see you there!

Relief Society Morningside 2013

This last weekend we had the Stake Relief Society Morningside.  If you were unable to attend I am posting just a few of my thoughts (Jenny Maxwell) about what she talked about so that you can be able to hear the message.  I know that sometimes weekends are really hectic with this activity and that so I thought I would put a few of my thoughts and her website so people who were interested but unable to attend could also get the information that was provided.

The woman who spoke was named Carrie Wrigley.  She is a LCSW (which stands for Licensed Clinical Social Worker) who has her own therapy practice in Sandy Utah.  She has spoken all over the country including at BYU Education Week.

Carrie spoke to us about a few different things including how there is a lot more sickness in the world than at any other time.  She spoke about how many people are suffering from depression and mental illness and how people in the church and out are suffering.  The thing that I thought was interesting was that she talked about the role exercise and eating right helps to treat mental illness.  A good portion of her talk was about the Word of Wisdom.  This really was interesting to me because she put food in 3 columns.  The first was the things that are forbidden like: coffee, tea, tobacco, drugs, and alcohol.  The second was things that we should eat like: fruits, vegetables, grains, etc.  And the third was things like: candy, chips, chocolate, soda, fast food, and processed foods.  Carrie spoke a lot about how we know the things not to do and the things that we should do but the whole middle column of things that are not specifically stated that we should not eat.  She spoke a lot about how these things are harmful for our bodies and that eating junk food is breaking the word of wisdom because it is bad for our bodies.  Carrie also sang a couple of beautiful songs that she had written herself.

Carrie has a website that has a lot of good resources about addictions, family relationships, and wellness.

Temple Covenants

10704_000_006 “The saving ordinances received in the temple that permit us to someday return to our Heavenly Father in an eternal family relationship and to be endowed with blessings and power from on high are worth every sacrifice and every effort,”1 said President Thomas S. Monson. If you have not yet been to the temple, you can prepare to receive sacred temple ordinances by:

Believing in Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost.
Cultivating a testimony of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the restored gospel.
Sustaining and following the living prophet.
Qualifying for a temple recommend by paying tithing, being morally clean, being honest, keeping the Word of Wisdom, and living in harmony with the teachings of the Church.
Giving time, talents, and means to help build the Lord’s kingdom.
Participating in family history work.2
President Monson further taught, “As we remember the covenants we make within [the temple], we will be more able to bear every trial and to overcome each temptation.”3

From the Scriptures

From Our History

“More than 5,000 Saints thronged the Nauvoo Temple after its dedication. …

“The strength, power, and blessings of temple covenants [sustained] the Latter-day Saints during their journey [west], when they [suffered] cold, heat, hunger, poverty, sickness, accidents, and death.”4

Like many Relief Society sisters, Sarah Rich served as a temple worker. She spoke of her experience: “If it had not been for the faith and knowledge that was bestowed upon us in that temple by … the Spirit of the Lord, our journey would have been like one taking a leap in the dark. … But we had faith in our Heavenly Father, … feeling that we were His chosen people … , and instead of sorrow, we felt to rejoice that the day of our deliverance had come.”5

The exodus was not a “leap in the dark” for faithful Latter-day Saint women. They were sustained by their temple covenants.

What Can I Do?

1. Am I worshipping in the temple regularly?
2. Am I encouraging my sisters to receive temple blessings?

April 2013 Newsletter

Presidency Message

Dear Sisters,

It’s April and Spring is finally here!  This for many of us means opening up our windows and getting the cleaning supplies out.  Windows will be washed, gardens prepared, dust and grime of winter removed.  It is a time to renew our homes just like the world around us is being renewed.

We would encourage you to not only renew your homes and yards but to renew your spirit.  Some ways you might do this are to get outside and enjoy the beauty around you of the blossoming trees and blooming flowers.  Enjoy the freshness in the air and the sounds of the birds greeting spring.  You can also renew your spirit by reconnecting with friends and neighbors who the cold winter weather may have kept you from seeing.  For some getting to the temple was harder to do when it was cold and weather was not so good.  Renew your spirit by attending the temple more often now that the weather is nice again.  Find a sunny spot near an open window and sit and feed your spirit as you read your scriptures or listen to a General Conference talk.  If you will take the time to give your spirit some spring cleaning you will  feel renewed and be more able to feel the fruit of the Spirit which is, “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, and faith” (Galatians 5:22).

Sisters we hope that you enjoy the new season we are blessed to enjoy and the beauty and happiness it can bring to you not only physically but spiritually as well.

Love,
Sue, Amy, Lisa, Jennefer and Jenny
