Relief Society Presidency Message

In searching for quotes from our General Authorities I was touched by many of the words spoken about motherhood.  The following two quotes from President Gordon B. Hinckley and Jeffrey R. Holland were eloquently stated and gave me faith and hope in my role as a mother and grandmother.  As Mother’s Day approaches, may we be mindful of the sacrifices our mothers made for us not to mention the sacrifices we have made as mothers in behalf of our own children.

President Gordon B. Hinckley on motherhood:
“Most of you are mothers, and very many of you are grandmothers and even great-grandmothers. You have walked the sometimes painful, sometimes joyous path of parenthood. You have walked hand in hand with God in the great process of bringing children into the world that they might experience this estate along the road of immortality and eternal life. It has not been easy rearing a family. Most of you have had to sacrifice and skimp and labor night and day. As I think of you and your circumstances, I think of the words of Anne Campbell, who wrote as she looked upon her children:
You are the trip I did not take;
You are the pearls I cannot buy;
You are my blue Italian lake;
You are my piece of foreign sky.
(“To My Child,” quoted in Charles L. Wallis, ed., The Treasure Chest [1965], 54)
You [mothers] are the real builders of the nation wherever you live, for you have created homes of strength and peace and security. These become the very sinew of any nation.” Gordon B. Hinckley, “Women of the Church,” Ensign, Nov 1996, 67

Motherhood - The Master of Heaven and Earth is There to Bless You.

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland on motherhood:
“When you have come to the Lord in meekness and lowliness of heart and, as one mother said, “pounded on the doors of heaven to ask for, to plead for, to demand guidance and wisdom and help for this wondrous task,” that door is thrown open to provide you the influence and the help of all eternity. Claim the promises of the Savior of the world. Ask for the healing balm of the Atonement for whatever may be troubling you or your children. Know that in faith things will be made right in spite of you, or more correctly, because of you.
You can’t possibly do this alone, but you do have help. The Master of Heaven and Earth is there to bless you—He who resolutely goes after the lost sheep, sweeps thoroughly to find the lost coin, waits everlastingly for the return of the prodigal son. Yours is the work of salvation, and therefore you will be magnified, compensated, made more than you are and better than you have ever been as you try to make honest effort, however feeble you may sometimes feel that to be.” Jeffrey R. Holland, “‘Because She Is a Mother’,” Ensign, May 1997, 35

May we each remember our mothers this month and every month with praise and respect for their righteous influence on our lives and may those of you who are mothers receive the same from your children for your never ending, unconditional love.

With love to each of you,
Sue, Amy, Lisa, Jennefer & Jenny

Summer Picnic in the Park Schedule for 2013

Even though we are expecting snow tonight summer is almost here! Well hopefully it is almost here.  Even so it's time to start up the Summer Picnic in the Park.  The summer schedule is posted below and I will also be posting weekly updates of the parks we are going to go to.  This is open to anyone who has kids who would like to go to the park.  Feel free to bring your friends too!  Some people bring lunches and eat at the park and some just go to play.  The start time is listed as around 10 am and they are every Thursday.  This week's park is going to be Faversham Park at 73rd and Ingalls.  Hope to see you there!

Relief Society Morningside 2013

This last weekend we had the Stake Relief Society Morningside.  If you were unable to attend I am posting just a few of my thoughts (Jenny Maxwell) about what she talked about so that you can be able to hear the message.  I know that sometimes weekends are really hectic with this activity and that so I thought I would put a few of my thoughts and her website so people who were interested but unable to attend could also get the information that was provided.

The woman who spoke was named Carrie Wrigley.  She is a LCSW (which stands for Licensed Clinical Social Worker) who has her own therapy practice in Sandy Utah.  She has spoken all over the country including at BYU Education Week.

Carrie spoke to us about a few different things including how there is a lot more sickness in the world than at any other time.  She spoke about how many people are suffering from depression and mental illness and how people in the church and out are suffering.  The thing that I thought was interesting was that she talked about the role exercise and eating right helps to treat mental illness.  A good portion of her talk was about the Word of Wisdom.  This really was interesting to me because she put food in 3 columns.  The first was the things that are forbidden like: coffee, tea, tobacco, drugs, and alcohol.  The second was things that we should eat like: fruits, vegetables, grains, etc.  And the third was things like: candy, chips, chocolate, soda, fast food, and processed foods.  Carrie spoke a lot about how we know the things not to do and the things that we should do but the whole middle column of things that are not specifically stated that we should not eat.  She spoke a lot about how these things are harmful for our bodies and that eating junk food is breaking the word of wisdom because it is bad for our bodies.  Carrie also sang a couple of beautiful songs that she had written herself.

Carrie has a website that has a lot of good resources about addictions, family relationships, and wellness.

Temple Covenants

10704_000_006 “The saving ordinances received in the temple that permit us to someday return to our Heavenly Father in an eternal family relationship and to be endowed with blessings and power from on high are worth every sacrifice and every effort,”1 said President Thomas S. Monson. If you have not yet been to the temple, you can prepare to receive sacred temple ordinances by:

Believing in Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost.
Cultivating a testimony of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the restored gospel.
Sustaining and following the living prophet.
Qualifying for a temple recommend by paying tithing, being morally clean, being honest, keeping the Word of Wisdom, and living in harmony with the teachings of the Church.
Giving time, talents, and means to help build the Lord’s kingdom.
Participating in family history work.2
President Monson further taught, “As we remember the covenants we make within [the temple], we will be more able to bear every trial and to overcome each temptation.”3

From the Scriptures

From Our History

“More than 5,000 Saints thronged the Nauvoo Temple after its dedication. …

“The strength, power, and blessings of temple covenants [sustained] the Latter-day Saints during their journey [west], when they [suffered] cold, heat, hunger, poverty, sickness, accidents, and death.”4

Like many Relief Society sisters, Sarah Rich served as a temple worker. She spoke of her experience: “If it had not been for the faith and knowledge that was bestowed upon us in that temple by … the Spirit of the Lord, our journey would have been like one taking a leap in the dark. … But we had faith in our Heavenly Father, … feeling that we were His chosen people … , and instead of sorrow, we felt to rejoice that the day of our deliverance had come.”5

The exodus was not a “leap in the dark” for faithful Latter-day Saint women. They were sustained by their temple covenants.

What Can I Do?

1. Am I worshipping in the temple regularly?
2. Am I encouraging my sisters to receive temple blessings?

Presidency Message

Dear Sisters,

It’s April and Spring is finally here!  This for many of us means opening up our windows and getting the cleaning supplies out.  Windows will be washed, gardens prepared, dust and grime of winter removed.  It is a time to renew our homes just like the world around us is being renewed.

We would encourage you to not only renew your homes and yards but to renew your spirit.  Some ways you might do this are to get outside and enjoy the beauty around you of the blossoming trees and blooming flowers.  Enjoy the freshness in the air and the sounds of the birds greeting spring.  You can also renew your spirit by reconnecting with friends and neighbors who the cold winter weather may have kept you from seeing.  For some getting to the temple was harder to do when it was cold and weather was not so good.  Renew your spirit by attending the temple more often now that the weather is nice again.  Find a sunny spot near an open window and sit and feed your spirit as you read your scriptures or listen to a General Conference talk.  If you will take the time to give your spirit some spring cleaning you will  feel renewed and be more able to feel the fruit of the Spirit which is, “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, and faith” (Galatians 5:22).

Sisters we hope that you enjoy the new season we are blessed to enjoy and the beauty and happiness it can bring to you not only physically but spiritually as well.

Love,
Sue, Amy, Lisa, Jennefer and Jenny

Newsletter

Dear Sisters,
We hope you are having a great New Year!
We have been counseled in Relief Society about many good things. We have been instructed to Pray. Better Prayer will help our lives. Better Prayer will strengthen our relationship with our Father in Heaven and Savior Jesus Christ. We have the teachings of President Snow. And most recently we have the teaching from President Uchtdorf Of Regrets and Resolutions. He hopes for us to make three resolutions. 1) Resolve to spend more time with those we love. 2) Resolve to strive more earnestly to become the person God wants us to be. 3) Resolve to find happiness, regardless of our circumstances.
In February, it is our wish to continue working on those things, as well as to turn our minds to the Love of our Savior. “Jesus Christ loves all of us more than we can understand. When He was on earth He served the poor, the ignorant, the sinner, the despised. He taught the gospel to all who would listen, fed crowds of hungry people who came to hear Him, healed the sick, and raised the dead. He is the Creator of the earth and our Savior, yet He did many humble acts of service. Just before His Crucifixion He met with His disciples. After teaching them, He took a basin of water and a towel and washed their feet. In those days washing a visitor’s feet was a sign of honor love and service. When we willingly serve others in the spirit of love, we become more like Christ” (Gospel Principles pg 166).
May God bless you and be with you this month. We are grateful for your love and prayers, and are so thankful for how you love and serve each other.

Love, Sue, Amy, Lisa, Jenn, and Jenny

Converted unto the Lord
Faith, Family, Relief
New sisters of the Church—including Young Women entering Relief Society, sisters returning to activity, and new converts—need the support and friendship of visiting teachers. “Member involvement is vital to convert retention and in bringing less-active members back into full activity,” said Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. “Capture the vision that the Relief Society … can become [one of] the most powerful friendshipping resource[s] we have in the Church. Reach out early to those being taught and reactivated, and love them into the Church through your organization.”1
As members of Relief Society, we can help new members learn basic Church practices, such as:
 Giving a talk.
 Bearing testimony.
Living the law of the fast.
 Paying tithing and other offerings.
 Participating in family history work.
Performing baptisms and confirmations for their deceased ancestors.
“It takes attentive friends to make new members feel comfortable and welcomed at church,” said Elder Ballard.2 All of us, but especially visiting teachers, have important responsibilities to establish friendships with new members as a way of helping them become firmly “converted unto the Lord” (Alma 23:6).

From the Scriptures

2 Nephi 31:19–20; Moroni 6:4

From Our History

“With the ever-increasing number of converts,” said President Gordon B. Hinckley (1910–2008), “we must make an increasingly substantial effort to assist them as they find their way. Every one of them needs three things: a friend, a responsibility, and nurturing with ‘the good word of God’ (Moroni 6:4).”3
Visiting teachers are in a position to help those they watch over. Friendship often comes first, as it did for a young Relief Society sister who was the visiting teacher of an older sister. They had been slow in building a friendship until they worked side by side on a cleaning project. They became friends, and as they talked about the Visiting Teaching Message, they were both nurtured by “the good word of God.”
President Joseph Fielding Smith (1876–1972) said Relief Society “is a vital part of the kingdom of God on earth and … helps its faithful members to gain eternal life in our Father’s kingdom.”4

What Can I Do?

1.  Do I pray for my companion and ask that the Spirit will guide us as we minister to our sisters?
2.  In what ways do we serve each sister we watch over so that she knows we truly care about her?
