Sunday, Aug 30th

During 3rd hour we had the privilage of hearing from Bro. Palmer regarding Family History work. He helped us all understand that we can be doing family history work and taking our own family names to the temple; which in turn will give us the amazing opportunity of helping our ancestors receive saving ordinances. No matter our experience with Family History in the past, we can easily learn from many in our ward and stake to find names to take to the temple. We should help our youth and even children get involved in the work. Elder Bednar has promised amazing blessing to those that do so. Bro. Palmer shared this video regarding James:

Family Search also just released a new instructional video to teach you how to find ancestors that are not on your direct line. This way it is possible to find more ancestors that need temple work done for them.

Please take the time to learn to do this saving work, for you and for your ancestors.

Sunday, Sept 23rd

Sis. Amber Johnson was so kind to substitute for our RS lesson today. She taught on the conference talk, Therefore They Hushed Their Fears by Elder Bednar. She started the lesson by engaging us in a "Fear Factor" activity, Relief Society style. The activity quickly reminded us that fear, or being afraid, is a real part of our lives. It can effect us in our relationships, our health, and especially regarding our children and loved ones. Elder Bednar says, "In our daily lives, endless reports of criminal violence, famine, wars, corruption, terrorism, declining values, disease, and the destructive forces of nature can engender fear and apprehension....My purpose is to describe how fear is dispelled through a correct knowledge of and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ."

The prophet Alma teaches us that not even a prophet can hush, or calm, our fears. During Alma's day "he counseled the believer to remember the Lord and the deliverance only He could bestow." Elder Bednar teaches, "Correct knowledge of and faith in the Lord empower us to hush our fears because Jesus Christ is the only source of enduring peace." In D&C 19:23 we read, "Learn of me, and listen to my words; walk in the meekness of my Spirit, and you shall have peace in me."

We are taught three basic principles in order to hush our fears: 1)Look to Christ, 2) Build upon the foundation of Christ, and 3) Press forward with Faith in Christ. "The peace Christ gives allows us to view mortality through the precious perspective of eternity and supplies a spiritual settledness that helps us maintain a consistent focus on our heavenly destination."

Elder Bendar also teaches us that Fear of the Lord is different from fear of worldly cares. "Unlike wordly fear that creates alarm and anxiety, godly fear is a source of peace, assurance, and confidence. . . godly fears dispels mortal fears. It even subdues the haunting concern that we never can be good enough spiritually and never will measure up to the Lord's requirements and expectations. In truth, we cannot be good enough or measure up relying solely upon our own capacity and performance. Our works and desires alone do not and cannot save us. After all we can do (2 Nephi 25:23), we are made whole only through the mercy and grace available through the Savior's infinite and eternal atoning sacrifice."

Sunday Lesson: Aug 16th

Our teacher did such a wonderful job teaching this weeks lesson, Keeping the Law of Chastity, Chp. 17 in our Ezra Taft Benson manual. "In the Church and kingdom of God, chastity will never be out-of-date, regardless of what the world may say or do." We are reminded that "The moral code of heaven for both men and women is complete chastity before marriage and full fidelity after marriage." This law has been since the beginning of time and this standard will not change.

There are five guidelines that can help us stay morally clean, resist temptation, and prevent ourselves from falling into sin. We can use these things to defend oursleves:
1) Clean thoughts - control your thoughts live with a clean character
2) Prayers for strength - pray for the power to resist temptation
3) Avoidance of improper situations - ask yourself, "Would my spouse be pleased if he or she knew I was doing this?"
4) Modesty - "Shun the low and the vulgar and the suggestive
5) Healthful, positive activities - "We must do more than simply remove the negative influences from our lives. We must replace them with righteous activites..."

We are reminded of the scripture in D&C 58:42 "Behold, he who has repented of his sins, the same is forgiven, and I, the Lord, remember them no more." If we have become entangled in sexual sin, Pres. Benson gives five important things we can do to get back to a state of moral purity. They are:
1) Flee immediately from any bad situation
2) Plead with the Lord for the power to overcome
3) Let your priesthood leaders help you
4) Fill your lives with positive sources of power
and 5) Remember that through proper repentance, you can become clean again

At an early age parents should be talking to their children about chastity and intimacy, both for their physical and moral protection. Our teacher pointed out that there is a wonderful article in the July/August LDS Living magazine entitled My Body is a Temple: Teaching young children about intimacy. It is a wonderful article to refer to.

We have the law of chastity to bring us joy; not only to us, but to our society as well. "Our Heavenly Father desires nothing for us but to be happy. He tells us only those things that will bring us joy. And one of the surest principles given by God to help us find that joy is the law of chastity. I pray with all my heart that you will consider most solemnly the joyful consequences of keeping this law; and the tragic consequences of violating it," President Ezra Taft Benson.

Sunday Lesson: Aug 9th

Our lesson came from Chp. 13 in our Ezra Taft Benson manual, Priceless Blessing of the House of the Lord. There is a sweet memory shared from Pres. Benson at the beginning of the lesson when he remembered his mother ironing her temple robes to get ready to go the the temple. "She drew a chair close to mine, and told me about temple work - how important it is to be able to go to the temple and participate in the sacred ordinances performed there."

We learn about six ways that the temple is important to us in this lesson. The first is that Temples are symbols of all we hold dear. "The temple is the nearest place to heaven on mortal earth." President Benson also teaches us that, "The temple is a constant, visible symbol that God has not left man to grope in darkness. it is a place of revelation." He shares of a time as the Secretary of Agriculture when he was asked to greet the president of a country in Los Angeles, California. He says, "As I sat there in this dinner, which was sponsored in large measure by the motion picture industry and at which many movie stars were present, I could look out a beautiful bay window. Down the avenue, on the elevation, I could see the soft floodlights around our glorious Los Angeles Temple, and I had the joy of pointing it out to my guests and to friends at our table and other tables. I thought, as we sat there, 'Much of what goes on tonight is simply the froth of life. The things that endure, the things that are real, the things that are important are those things represented in the temple of God.'"

The second important point taught to us is that we need temple ordinances and covenants. "If a couple are true to their covenants, they are entitled to the blessing of the the highest degree of the celestial kingdom. These covenants today can only be entered into by going to the House of the Lord."

The only way we receive God's greatest blessings pertaining to eternal life is through temple ordinances and covenants. This is the third way that temples are so important. We learn that, "There is power associated with he ordinances of heaven - even the power of godliness - which can and will thwart the forces of evil if we will be worthy of those sacred blessings. Our community will be protected, our families will be protected, our children will be safeguarded as we live the gospel, visit the temple, and live close to the Lord . . . God bless us as Saints to live worthy of the covenants and ordinances made in this sacred place."

Our teacher did such a wonderful job reminding us of the fourth way that temples are of great importance: We have the privilege of opening the doors of salvation to our ancestors. Pres. Benson said, "When I think of genealogy, I see people - people I love who are waiting for our family, their posterity, to help them gain exaltation in the celestial kingdom." On the board was written If not me, then who? If we do not take the time to do temple work for our dead, we also cannot be saved in the kingdom of God.

The temple is a sacred place, but just because it is sacred does not mean we shouldn't talk to our children and grandchildren about it's magnificence. Pres. Benson tells us that the fifth way the temple is so important is that our children and youth need to learn about the blessings that await them there. We need to answer questions they have about the temple and talk about our own experiences and feelings that we have experienced. To connect to the importance of temple work, Pres. Benson said, "I believe the youth are not only willing and able to do genealogical research, but they are a good means of giving life to the whole program."

The last and sixth way that temples are so important to us is we need to understand that increased temple attendance leads to increased personal revelation. Pres. Benson teaches, "In the course of our visits to the temple, we are given insights into the meaning of the eternal journey of man. We see beautiful and impressive symbolism of the most important events - past, present, and future - symbolizing man's mission in relationship to God. We are reminded of our obligations as we make solemn covenants pertaining to obedience, consecration, sacrifice, and dedicated service to our Heavenly Father."

There are countless blessing awaiting us and those who have gone before us if we understand the importance of the temple and make it a priority to attend. "Let us make the temple a sacred home away from our eternal home."

Sunday Lesson: Aug 2nd

The presidency message for this month was taught by Sis. Lisa Lara on Pres. Eyring's recent conference address, Is Not This the Fast That I Have Chosen? Have you ever been far away from someone you love when they need your help? It could be a family member or friend that needs to be rescued, but you are too far away. The first thing that we may think of is to pray for them. We ask Heavenly Father to watch over and bless them. There is also something else we can do for them, and that is to fast.

In True to the Faith we learn what fasting is all about. "To fast is to go without food and drink voluntarily for a certain period of time. Fasting combined with sincere prayer can help you prepare yourself and others to receive God's blessings." We also learn in True to the Faith that there are many purposes to fasting. They include expressing gratitude, asking Heavenly Father to bless the sick or afflicted, asking to receive personal revelation, gain strength to resist temptation, and receive guidance in sharing the gospel and magnify church callings. These are just a few of the reasons for fasting. If we fast without a purpose, and without starting and ending with sincere prayer, we are really just going without food and water.

Pres. Eyring talks about our future interview with the Lord. In Matthew 24:34-40 we learn that if we can inherit the kingdom of God if we only serve those around us like we would serve our Savior. But how do we reach all those in the world that need help? The Lord has taught us that it is through the law of the fast. In Isaiah we learn about this commandment and the blessings that will come if we follow it: "Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy housle? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? That shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily; and thy righteousness shall  go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rearward." Isaiah 58: 6-11

President Eyring quote's President Spencer W. Kimball regarding the importance of this commandment. Pres. Kimball said, "Rich promises are made by the Lord to those who fast and assist the needy. Inspiration and spiritual guidance will come with righteousness and closeness to our Heavenly Father. To omit to do this righteous act of fasting would deprive us of these blessings."

We had some wonderful experiences shared from sisters in our ward as they have fasted and gained a testimony of it. Fasting can be very challenging, but as we strive to do our best, we will be blessed and so will those around us. Pres. Eyring reminds us that, "Your fast offereing will do more than help feed and clothe bodies. It will heal and change hearts." A perfect example of this can be seen in the life of Sis. Abie Turay from Sierra Leone.  A beautiful video about her experience being blessed by receiving fast offerings.

The Lord promises us a great promises if we do all that we reasonable can to pray, fast and donate to those in need: "Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring froth speedily: and thy righteous shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rearward. Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am." Isaiah 58:8-9.

Presidency Message by Marty Rozeski
In the Book of Mormon, Nephi writes about his experience traveling in the wilderness for eight years. “And so great were the blessings of the Lord upon us, that while we did live upon raw meat in the wilderness, our women did give plenty of suck for their children, and were strong, yea even like unto the men; and they began to bear their journeyings without murmurings. And thus we see that the commandments of God must be fulfilled. And if it so be that the children of men keep the commandments of God he doth nourish them, and provide means whereby they can accomplish the things which he hath commanded them; wherefore, he did provide means for us while we did sojourn in the wilderness.” (I Nephi 17: 2-3)

Compare this to the comments of Nephi’s brethren, who endured the SAME journey. “…We have wandered in the wilderness for these many years; and our women have toiled, being big with child; and they have bourne children in the wilderness and suffered all things, save it were death; and it would have been better that they had died before they came out of Jerusalem than to have suffered these afflictions.” (I Nephi 17: 20)

What a difference in perspective! Two people can be doing the same thing but with quite different perspectives. Our perspective becomes the lens through which we view life. Why did Nephi sound thankful? He was secure in his knowledge of God’s plan. He was secure because he asked God to help him understand the plan for his family, and he obeyed God’s commandments so the plan would be sure.

Nephi is the example to follow. We have to develop a personal testimony of our Savior to give us strength to face our problems and challenges. God will stand by us and protect us from temptations. The gospel of Jesus Christ gives us the true perspective, one we can know and trust- an eternal perspective. It takes some courage to live the gospel with an eternal perspective. Courage is faith put into action, acting on what we believe.

I know God wishes us to be happy and to have joy. The greatest joy is the peace of knowing that we are following the path that leads us to eternal life, that our house is in order, and that we are preparing to meet our Savior.

Love, Marty, Lisa, Jan, & Debbie
